Movie night ideas for couples, beyond "what’s on tonight"

A movie night does not need an occasion, but a little shape helps. These are ideas that cost nothing and make the choice easier, because the theme does half of the choosing for you.

Change the format

• A double feature: two films that talk to each other, like a film and the one that inspired it.
• A trilogy weekend, one film a night. Before Sunrise (1995), Before Sunset (2004) and Before Midnight (2013) are made for this.
• A short night: two or three short films when you only have an hour.
• A rewatch of the film you saw on one of your first dates, and a score for it now.

Pick by a rule instead of a title

• Decade night: each of you picks a year, the film has to come from it.
• A director’s first feature, then their most recent one.
• A film from the country one of you would most like to visit.
• The highest-rated film on your list that neither of you has seen.

Take turns properly

• Alternate who picks, and the picker cannot be vetoed that night.
• Swap guilty pleasures: each of you shows the other the film you secretly love.
• Watch a classic neither of you has seen, like Casablanca (1942), and rate it honestly.

Make the room part of it

• Cook something from where the film is set.
• Watch on a wall with a projector, or outside if the weather allows.
• Phones in another room until the credits.

Keep what happened
